Hundreds of people gathered Tuesday at Goleta Beach to participate in an ancient ritual that kicks off High Holy Days on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Members of UCSB Hillel, the Community Shul of Montecito and Congregation B'nai B'rith threw bread crumbs into the ocean, symbolizing the casting away of sin. The next 10 days, leading up to Yom Kippur on Oct. 13, are a time of deep reflection and atonement for Jews.
